Since the frigid day in the winter of 1975, Amir had continued to remember the events that occurred on that day and it continued to eat away at him. Hassan had been faithful and devoted to Amir by standing up to others when he was too cowardly to stand up for himself, and Hassan even told him he truly would do anything he asked him to do. When Amir had the chance to return the favour, he was too much of a coward and ran away from it all, hoping he could forget what he witnessed. In America decades later, Amir knew that when Rahim Khan called him, it was a chance at redemption. He agreed to return to Kabul to face and attempt to repay Hassan for what he had done by looking for his orphan son, Sohrab. Amir atoned for his actions in his past by reliving those crucial moments of his child hood to continue his journey towards redemption. Amir was successfully able to relieve his guilt through returning to Kabul, defeating and rescuing Sohrab from Assef, and finally committing to Sohrab that he would stay loyal to him, which he displayed by going kite running for him and saying he would do so, "a thousand times over."
